The new Series CV 500 tooling from Guill Tool & Engineering Inc. combines elements of its modular design from Guill’s 800 medical series as well as its highly successful polymer/rubber extrusion heads. This technology offers many key benefits to wire and cable and other industrial users, including a higher degree of accuracy to meet the latest stringent wire and cable technology demands.
Today’s demanding wire and cable manufacturers, as well as extrusion companies’ operators and technicians are benefiting from the CV 500 Series with its improved temperature control, decreased material volume for ultra-precision, plus easier and faster adjustment and cleaning processes of the crosshead and tooling. Maintaining peak performance tooling is now built into the Series 500 in order to assist with the operator’s work scheduling, and to provide better and more precise end products.
Precision Crosshead Design
The CV 500 Series is a precision crosshead design, which is well suited to meet the greater strength and improved tolerances required for the manufacture of today’s newest wire and cable needs for a growing number of power utilities, plus other industrial high-voltage applications.
“We have been engineering for wire and cable and continuous vulcanization applications since the inception of Guill Tool & Engineering in 1962,” states Roger Guillemette, Chairman and CEO of Guill Tool & Engineering Inc. “Today, electric utility and industrial customers are asking for increasingly higher performance extrusion capabilities. This CV 500 Series tooling is our most advanced yet, designed to meet today’s tough industrial demands.”
Flow Analysis
The rigorous flow testing and analysis enables the production of more difficult polymer/rubber applications with a high level of product consistency throughout, resulting in adherence to the precise tolerances and thinner walls required in these applications. “This adds up to huge customer savings in material and labor for production over the course of a year,” stresses Guillemette.
With testing and analysis, parameters such as flow, pressure, heat and the wall thickness of the particular product to be extruded are critical to performance.
Even Heat Equals Better Flow
Balanced temperature control for better flow is made possible by an integrated water cooling system. With the cooling system, the appropriate processing temperature for the rubber in the crosshead is maintained. By having the water cooling capability, the potential for scorching of the rubber extrusion is eliminated. “The close-tolerance extrusion process made possible by our new crosshead results in reduced material waste while generating significant cost savings for customers,” emphasizes Guillemette.
Multilayer Extrusion Capability
“Unlike tandem extrusion, multilayer extrusion prevents contamination and ensures greater adhesion. We are receiving more and more requests for multilayer capability, especially for triple-layer cable,” summarizes Guillemette.
As part of the new CV design, Guill’s multiport feed system and the configuration of the flow splitter, determined through flow testing and analysis, enable customization for the precise multilayer requirements of each customer’s specific needs.
Other important Guill Technologies built into the CV 500 Series are:
- Quick tooling changes—as short as 15 minutes for less downtime.
- The SealRight™ System—for leak-free design.
- Fixed center or adjustable center capabilities. (Usually multilayer applications use an adjustable center configuration.)
- Competitively priced for wire and cable and other industrial applications.
Specifications
